Ontologies and Software Engineering

Tthe object model is the center of data modeling; on the other hand ontology itself has the concept which is the basis of knowledge base. The goal of the data model is to certify that all data objects required by the database are completely and accurately represented. Because the data model uses easily understood notations and natural language, it can be examined and confirmed as correct by the end-users. Ontologies are objects of interest (universal of discourse).

Ontology describes the types of things that exist, and rules that govern them; a object model defines records about things, and is the basis for a database design. Not all the information in ontology may be needed (or can even be held) in a data model and there are a number of choices that need to be made (West, M., 2006).

Ontologies are promised to bright future. This paper proposes that as ontologies are closely related to modern object oriented software engineering, it is natural to adapt existing object-oriented software development methodologies for the task of ontology development. This is some part of similarity between descriptive ontologies and database schemas, conceptual data models in object oriented are good applicant for ontology modeling, however; the difference between constructs in object models and in current ontology proposals which are object structure, object identity, generalization hierarchy, defined constructs, views, and derivations. We can view ontology design as an extension of logical database design, which mean that the training object data software developers could be a promising approach. An ontology is the comparable of database schema but ontology represent a much richer information model than normal database schema, and also a richer information model compared to UML class/object model. Object modeling focus on identity and behavior is completely different from the relational model's focus on information.

It is likely to adjust existing object oriented software development methodologies for the ontology development. The object model of a system consists of objects, identified from the text description and structural linkages between them corresponding to existing or established relationships. The ontologies provide metadata schemas, offering a controlled vocabulary of concepts. At the center of both object models and ontologies are objects within a given problem domain. The difference is that while the object model should contain explicitly shown structural dependencies between objects in a system, including their properties, relationships, events and processes, the ontologies are based on related terms only. On the other hand, the object model refers to the collections of concepts used to describe the generic characteristics of objects in object oriented languages. Because ontology is accepted as a formal, explicit specification of a shared conceptualization, we can naturally link ontologies with object models, which represent a system oriented map of related objects easily.

Anatomy and Physiology 1 Help - 5 Tips to Pass

Anatomy and Physiology 1 is a difficult class that causes anxiety and frustration in most students. As a former student and current instructor of anatomy I have become familiar with some techniques and tips that will help the student to learn anatomy and physiology and to make passing the class a little less painful.

1: Breath better, learn more. Our brains need adequate amounts of oxygen in order to function. Most of us tend to breath faster, shorter breaths when in stressful situations, like studying and taking tests. Trying to concentrate without a good supply of oxygen is like to swim in a poll with only three feet of water! Inhaling deeply and holding it for a count of eight and exhaling for three to four repetitions increases the pressure in the lungs thereby forcing more oxygen into the bloodstream. Injecting this fresh supply of oxygen into the overworked mind can help to kick start the learning process and reduce the associated anxiety.

2: Create comfort patterns. Try to think of ways to reduce distractions when you study and during test taking. Most likely when you are going to take your exam the room will be well lit and quiet so this is the environment in which you should study. By duplicating, as much as possible, the test day conditions while you study you can prepare your brain to tap into the information easier when it comes time to take the exam. Study in the same clothes you will wear on the test day, chew the same gum, wear the same perfume. Make the exam a natural and comfortable part of your everyday routine and your brain will react favorably.

3: Verbalize everything you learn. When you study talk out loud. Become familiar with the pronunciation of the terms used in anatomy by saying and listening to the words. Find a study partner who will listen to you and who will also speak. This helps both of you to tap into yet another sense that can anchor your thoughts.

4: Listen to what your instructor stresses. Most instructors will stress or repeat the information they deem important. Highlight these concepts in your notes and book. Find questions that target what he or she is firmly conveying. There are only so many ways to ask a question and a limited amount of time in which to test so most instructors want to keep students focused on what to study and you must keep an ear open to this direction.

5: Find old questions. Take as many practice tests as you can find. These can be found in the back of textbooks, in the library and online. Familiarize yourself not only with the correct answer but try to understand why it was right and why the others were incorrect. You will start to see common themes and similar questions that may very well be asked to you. You are not trying to memorize the answers, you are looking for repeating concepts.

How to Celebrate Passing to the Next Grade When School’s Out for the Summer!

There are always a few children who are sorry to see the year end, but for the majority the last day of school is the best day of the year! Depending on where you live and the way the school year is scheduled, kids are usually out for summer for two months or longer. That's two months of sleeping in and enjoying all their favorite activities. If you want to get off to a great start, here are some ways to celebrate the end of the school year:

•For girls, a sleepover is one of the best ways to have a party. This is a great way for her to celebrate with her friends without being in school. Rent movies, order pizza, and let them stay up as late as they want! Depending on their ages, you may want to provide activities for them like play makeup or board games.

•For boys, pitch a tent in the backyard or build a tree house where they can have their own special "boys' club". This is a great way for them to enjoy having their friends over and for having sleepovers of their own. Only camp out in the back yard if it is secured, and an adult is willing to supervise.

•Surprise them with tickets to a show for their favorite characters or performers. From Elmo to Hannah Montana, there is something that every child of any age will enjoy.

•Go to the closest amusement park. They have always been a favorite way for kids to enjoy their free time and the larger theme parks have something to offer every child of every age with many featuring characters from favorite TV shows as well!

•Go to the water park. Even though your child likes to swim, there's nothing that's more fun than the slides and splashes you get from a water park. Some amusement parks have water parks in them as well so you can enjoy both events in one!

•Give them gift cards to rent movies. The video stores won't let them rent something that isn't age appropriate and they can choose what they want to watch and budget their movie allowance or splurge on the first week!
•Take kids shopping (with a set budget if needed) and let them choose an activity they would like to have for the summer.

•Go to the movies. Instead of watching a movie at home, go to the theater and buy a tub of popcorn and a drink while you sit back and watch with surround sound.

Once you have found the ideal way to celebrate the end of the school year, make a tradition out of it. Doing the same thing each year will be a great way to mark your child's/children's milestones.

You may also ask your child which celebration he/she would prefer and get ideas that you hadn't even thought of. Just keep in mind, it is a celebration for the kids and you want to do something that they will enjoy!

Safety Assessment of Sugar Substitutes

There have been extensive research on low calories sugar substitutes followed by meticulous inspections and law enforcements by official authorities in food industry. This is mainly due to achieving safety measures of sweetener content products rather than taste desirability and quality. Any low-calorie sweetener present in food products is legally obligated to be stated in ingredients on the packages.

Analysis of the acceptable daily intake i.e. ADI must be carried out within adequate parameter before being legally permitted to process and manufacture. It is specified as milligrams per kg of body weight that can be safely followed for daily consumption. The acceptable daily intake of each sweetener is evaluated cautiously to the extent that it is dramatically less than the safe portion for animals (resulting from laboratory animal experiments).

During ingestion aspartame is chemically decomposed into smaller components such as aspartic acid and phenylalanine. The latter may be harmful to those suffering phenylketonuria; a genetic disease with insufficient hepatic enzyme (phenylalanine hydroxylase which is able to metabolize phenylalanine) that can lead to depositing phenylalanine and ultimately turning into phenylketone which is detectable in urine discharge. Thus it is required to be clearly specified on labels that 'should not be used by phenylketonuria patients, contains phenylalanine'. This specification is a legal obligation in some countries like in the United Kingdom.

Launching Day Care Activities For Different Age Groups

Review of Dragon Genetics

Piles and piles of research show that students learn better when they are fully and actively engaged in what they are learning, rather than attempting to passively absorb information. That is why good teachers in all subjects and at all levels find ways to get students fully involved. In science classes, one of the most important tools to achieve this goal is hands-on lab work.

Unfortunately, some topics don't lend themselves very well to classroom experimentation. Genetics is a good example. Most studies of genetics require breeding large numbers of organisms through several generations. Some teachers manage to do fruit fly, bacteria, or Arabadopisis (a species of quick growing mustard plant) breeding experiments, but the logistics are daunting. Fortunately, there are alternatives. The very best alternative that I am aware of is Dragon Genetics.

Dragon Genetics is a free, downloadable program made by Pedogicica. As the name suggests, it allows users to explore the genetics of dragons in great depth. By happy coincidence, dragons have many genetic parallels with more familiar organisms, including humans.

Dragon Genetics is admirably clear and thorough. It starts out at the very beginning, and it goes all the way through the topics covered in AP Biology. From the beginning, it explicitly links the principles of genetics with the physical structure of chromosomes, rather than following the historical path of first discussing phenotypes and patterns of inheritance and only later connecting those facts to the physical structure of DNA.

Dragon Genetics teaches about monohybrids, dihybrids, mutations, and x-linked traits, among other topics. It does not discuss epigenetics, mitochondrial inheritance, or other similarly advanced subjects.

One of the characteristics that make Dragon Genetics effective is its sense of whimsy. The graphics are not cutting-edge, but the cartoon dragons are appealing and it is fun to figure out how to breed fire-breathing animals. At least as important is the structure of Dragon Genetics. The student must actively engage with the program, and do so successfully before being allowed to move on. In essence, the student learns about genetics by performing "experiments" and interpreting the results. Carefully structured questions guide the student through the process of interpreting "experimental" data. Of course the experiments are just computer models, with pre-determined results, but they are very good models and they allow for a genuine process of inquiry to take place.

As a tutor, I have used Dragon Genetics as an independent-study tool with considerable success. Because time is often quite limited when I'm helping students prepare for exams such as the Living Environment Regents, the SAT subject test in biology, and AP Biology, I will have students use Dragon Genetics to review genetics and related topics such as meiosis on their own, thereby buying more time to spend on everything else. In my experience, students who have completed Dragon Genetics almost always demonstrate a very good understanding of the material covered.

The program could also be used in a classroom context, as long as sufficient computers are available. Dragon Genetics is broken down into eight core lessons and four optional lessons. Each of the core lessons are designed to take about 45-50 minutes, so they will fit into most class periods. The optional lessons are shorter.

As a tutor who needs to get "results", in the form of higher test scores, I appreciate the way that Dragon Genetics teaches content. As a teacher who genuinely loves science and cares about teaching logical thinking skills and the thought processes that underlie all science, I am enthusiastic about the way that Dragon Genetics teaches critical thinking and scientific method.

Now, the newest technical device is a videophone, so even the TTY/TDD is being used less every day. With the use of a videophone, deaf individuals can place telephone calls to anyone by using this new technology. A deaf person merely has to call the relay center where a hearing person is visible to both parties via a television screen. Instead of typing like the TTY/TDD technology requires, the two will communicate only in sign language. The deaf person will provide the interpreter with a telephone number to call. The interpreter places the call to the hearing party. The conversation is then signed to the deaf individual. The interpreter simply signs over the TV screen to the deaf person, and speaks to the hearing person through a headset. Conversations between deaf and hearing are now being done this way all around the world.

Here, I have only listed a few reasons why learning sign language is important. In life, there are so many more reasons why learning this skill is so important; perhaps you have a deaf parent, child, or sibling. Maybe your co-worker is deaf, or perhaps you work at a job where you encounter many deaf customers. Regardless of why you are interested in sign language, there remains no doubt that you can benefit tremendously from knowing this rich and vast language.

How the United States Capitol Cupola Became a Symbol of Democracy

One of the most famous landmarks of the United States is the United States Capitol with the cupola or dome that graces its roofline. The Capitol dome, with its pure white sandstone is radiant—a symbol of democracy and strength. A breathtaking site when illuminated at night it is a fitting finale for the building it crowns. Located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, it houses the Senate and House chambers of the legislative branch. It is among the most symbolic and architecturally impressive buildings of our Nation.

The original cupola design began with a Capitol design contest operated by Thomas Jefferson who was Secretary of State under President George Washington. The award $500.00 and a city lot to whomever produced the winning plan. 17 plans were submitted, none of which were approved. Then in the fall a letter arrived from a Dr. William Thornton, requesting an opportunity to submit a plan which the Commissioners granted. The building was characterized by a Central dome (cupola).

The dome was to be placed over the rotunda and was a two dome structure. The interior dome rose 96 feet above the rotunda floor and was built of stone; the exterior was a wooden dome with a copper roof and rose 140 feet. At the top of the dome was a wide oculus to illuminate the rotunda floor. Thomas Jefferson called it, "the first temple dedicated to the sovereignty of the people."

As the United States grew and more states joined the Union the Capitol needed to be expanded. Extensions were built to the North and South. With these additions, the original dome was not aesthetically pleasing. To achieve balance the size of the cupola needed to be in proportion to the length of unbroken roof line. The old cupola was a fire hazard as it was made of timber frame. For these reasons, a new fireproof dome was considered necessary. This was a most ambitious undertaking in the history of American architecture.

The wooden dome was removed in the fall of 1856. The new dome was three times the height of the original dome and built out of cast iron with columns, pilasters, scores of windows and crowned with a statue. A large painting of the Apotheosis of Washington was painted on a shell and the canopy is suspended between the inner and outer dome and is visible through the oculus at the top of the inner dome. Apotheosis is a Greek word that means 'to raise to a god like stature.'

Domes with their circular shape have been called the perfect architectural shape, the circle being a symbol of the universe. In religious architecture domes proclaim the glory of God. The oculus or eye of the dome is considered the gateway of the Sun. From this gateway at the Top of the Dome rises the World Axis, the link between heaven and earth.

The dome was placed above the Rotunda, which is the circular room located on the second floor in the center of the Capitol. It is this room that has served as the ceremonial Center of the United States Capitol and known as the symbolic and physical heart of the U.S. Capitol.

As the United States grew it is clear that state governments saw the dome of the United States Capitol building as the American architectural icon of choice. Many states chose to emulate the structure to varying degrees in the construction of their own state capitols by incorporating a central dome or cupola in their designs.

The dome has gained a dominant presence in America's skylines, a symbol of democracy and of aspiration to enable all citizens to live lives of dignity and freedom.

What Can You Expect in TOEFL Test

It's important to adopt an effective preparation routine to ace your TOEFL test. Analyze the Data

The analysis of the data will be fairly straight forward. Students will just need to compare the average daily growth rates for each experiment and compare them to the control and to each other. If the hypothesis is correct then the student will notice that as the temperature is increased the rate of growth for the mold will also increase.

The Need For More Black Male Teachers

With the amount of discussion on clean air initiatives, renewable energy and the whole "greening" of America, we are neglecting another emerging industry that is ripe with opportunities and vital for national security.

That industry is education and the opportunities are ripe for Black male teachers who lag behind in applications for positions at all levels. Black male teachers are considered almost a "dying breed" at a time when they are most needed.

Educational jobs continue to rank high along with green jobs and children will still require some connection to scholars, teachers, professors, instructors as well as adults returning to academia for new careers or different skill sets.

It is all about economics. Studies have shown not only the significant difference between the income of a high school graduate and that of a college graduate, but also the findings have identified the high attrition rates among Black male students and the importance of role models to serve as motivators.

However, the research is only beginning to address the impact that Black male teachers could have on Black males during that critical educational transition. With all the data on the impact of absent Black fathers in the home, how beneficial would it be for Black students to encounter a positive influence in their school system? Could it be if there were more Black male teachers that more Black males would be able to achieve higher college graduation rates?

Education in America, according to an article published on WashingtonPost.com, needs a new vision that embraces the principles on which America was founded - freedom, equality, opportunity, responsibility and ownership.

Currently, America's educational system is still trying to re-define itself within the new administration and the post "No Child Left Behind" regime in which many children were still left behind. Black male teachers can play a vital role in bringing a new face of encouragement to education and bring up the number of Black males graduating from high school and pursuing higher education.

The importance of having a good education has been a consistent chant from parents to their children in order for them to achieve great things in the future. The message that should now resound in the community, especially the Black community, is the relevance of Black male teachers and their importance to the future of the community and the country.

"Having more Black male teachers, is the equivalent to having more Black men in the household. It creates a balance. A woman can't be a man and as a community we have to stop forcing the man's responsibility on women," states Guy Madison, Principal Consultant at GM Consulting. "Colleges and universities represent the testing ground for young people to define themselves and to determine what their future will be and it is the diversity of thought and experience that shapes the most well rounded student, and a respected Black male role model creates a respectful Black male student.

Opportunities abound for Black male teachers within the education industry and it is the responsibility of the Black community to reinforce the importance of Black male teachers so that more applicants "go for the green" in education and plant productive seeds in our future leaders.

History of Distance Learning

Many people think of distance learning in terms of the Internet, but distance learning has actually been around for over a century. In the nineteenth century, European universities began correspondence programs in which their students could study on their own and mail their assignments to their professors. Correspondence courses soon became widely accepted in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Many universities began granting external degrees, so that students could earn a college degree without ever stepping on campus.

Distance Learning in the United States

In 1892, Penn State University, along with the University of Wisconsin and the University of Chicago began correspondence studies for students in isolated rural areas. These three state universities were among the first in the U.S. to establish distance learning programs. More American schools soon joined these three universities in offering distance learning.

By the early 1970s, three state universities were established which would be dedicated only to distance learning. New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York established: Thomas Edison State College, Charter Oak State College, and Regents College (now Excelsior College) respectively. These schools focus on the needs of adult college students and are still in existence today.

Rise of Radio-courses and Telecourses

In the 1920s, Penn State was one of the first schools to offer courses over the radio to students across the country. Other schools also offered courses broadcast by radio. In 1951, City Colleges of Chicago began offering courses by television, which allowed students to earn a degree solely by televised courses.

The idea of televised courses became wide-spread. The University of Iowa opened its own broadcasting station in 1950 and began offering televised courses, as did several other schools. These courses were not universally accepted. While many World War II veterans wanted to use their GI benefits for telecourses, the Veteran's Administration felt that this would allow cheating on benefits and would not authorize payment for a televised course. Occasionally, disabled veterans were granted permission to use their GI benefits for telecourses.

Early telecourses consisted mainly of lectures. Elementary and secondary schools also entered the world of televised instruction, but their efforts were at first confined to classroom lectures, rather than entertaining demonstration that would engage the students.

In the 1970s, several organizations began preparing sophisticated television presentations which would give students an educational experience they could not enjoy in a traditional classroom. In cooperation with various universities, public television stations became leaders in producing telecourses. Today, telecourse presentations are frequently used in conjunction with online instruction.

Rise of Online Education

The University of Alberta began using online courses at its campus in 1968. Once the Internet as we know it began, the opportunity for online education expanded. Corporations began using online instruction to train their employees. In 1981, an online program was offered at the Western Behavioral Sciences Institute in California. Innovative technology for offering online courses continued to be developed throughout the 1980s, particularly by the UK's Open University.

In 1984, the New York Institute of Technology offered some of the first online courses in the United States. By the mid-1990s online courses were coming into their own. Thomas Edison State College was one of the first to offer online courses using the Blackboard system. Traditional campus-based universities also began offering some online programs and there was an explosion of new schools which offer only online programs.

Today, anyone desiring the flexibility of a distance education has thousands of online programs to choose from. Degrees ranging from the associate's level to the doctorate level are all available online. Distance education does have some drawbacks over traditional classroom instruction, such as the lack of face to face interaction in many programs; however, most distance students will tell you that distance education is a great value in terms of time, money, and satisfaction.

How College Prepares You For Real Life

When I was in college, I believed that real life would never be like university life. I wouldn't have to take tests, put up with loud parties next door, and I wouldn't have homework and deadlines. I was so wrong!

I've been out of college 20 years now and I realize the things I learned in and outside the classroom predicted a lot about my life. So, whether you are struggling or breezing through college, here are some easy activities that take you beyond academics and into life-long education:

Pay attention to your habits and preferences

Do you usually sleep through your morning classes? Do you study better in groups, or alone? Do you like eating in the residence hall dining room or grabbing a pizza on the go?

These things may seem trivial, but they actually are indicators of how you'll behave in life. If you struggle to make it to your 7:40 anatomy lab even when you go to bed 10, you will probably not want to work on Wall Street. If you're the last one to leave the dining hall at dinner because you find everyone's conversation so fascinating, you might think twice about becoming a medical researcher.

I studied journalism because I loved to write. But, as an extreme introvert, I felt constantly agitated because I had to attend events, interview people, and work in a cramped office full of other stressed out reporters. I lasted less than two years in the profession. Freelance writing from my computer at home is a much better fit.

Network Carefully

Even if you're an introvert like me, the people you meet and genuinely like in college will be friends and mentors forever. People who have important positions might be helpful in the short term, but look out! You might think a recommendation from the flirtatious assistant City Attorney who teaches your Business Law Class would look good on paper. But what will he want in return? If you feel uncomfortable around somebody, its best to look for mentors elsewhere.

Many of the people I thought were offering mentorship really wanted to have an affair. (Yes, they were married.) In my day, this was shocking and I was naive. Hopefully you will be filtering out people who lack integrity and avoid my mistakes.

On the other hand, a supervisor for my second political internship liked me so much (and I her) that she fixed me up with her son, Chris. Chris and I just celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary.

Make Adjustments to Effectively Meet Deadlines

Finals weeks were among the worst and most stressful weeks of my life. I still have nightmares about them, as do a lot of people. That's because you never graduate from deadlines and stress. There are bills to pay, forms to fill out whenever you want to apply for a loan or hook up your electricity. There are schedules to follow for things as routine as trash pickup. Even Christmas is a deadline!

So enjoy finals week. If you get migraines, take fewer classes. Don't be a perfectionist. It's not worth it.

I was a purist. My self-esteem was shot if I took fewer than 18 credit hours per semester. It wasn't until I had a nervous breakdown my third year in college that I slowed down a bit, at least for awhile. I had several more breakdowns throughout my life before I realized that I'm not like other people. I need a slow and quiet lifestyle in order to be my best.
